How to Choose a Qualified Dermatologist
Only doctors with these degrees can legally practice dermatology:
MD (Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy): 3-year PG after MBBS. Most recognized.
DNB (Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy): Equivalent to MD, awarded by NBE.
DVD / DDVL: 2-year diploma after MBBS. Legally accepted.
These do not qualify for skin treatment or diagnosis:
BDS (Dental degree), even with cosmetology courses
BHMS, BAMS, BUMS: Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Unani
Beautician or cosmetology diplomas (non medical)
Short-term courses in lasers, Botox, or fillers without MBBS + Dermatology degree
Going to a non-dermatologist can lead to:
Wrong diagnosis and treatment delays
Burns, scars, or pigmentation
Infections from poor hygiene
Worsening of skin or hair issues
Rare deaths from unsafe hair transplants
These do not qualify for skin treatment or diagnosis:
Wearing a white coat or using the title ‘skin specialist’ does not make someone a dermatologist.
Always verify your doctor’s credentials.
Ask if they hold an MD / DNB / DVD in Dermatology.
Ensure they are registered with a recognized medical council.
